OUR HISTORY

Before the Galahs there existed a little team called the Vienna Kangaroos made up of a few Australian expats and their friends. The emphasis of this team was to play Australian footy and have fun but as the years passed, player responsibilities outside of the club took over and sadly, in 2010, the Kangaroos played their last game. But from the ashes of the Kangaroo would rise the Galah..In 2018, two friends from the Kangaroos, Seb and Pablo, decided to revive Australian Football in Vienna, and thus the Vienna Galahs Australian Football Club was born.

Year One of the Galahs was tough with often only the founding members at training. Through passion and persistence the word of the bird spread and numbers swelled. The Vienna Gaels, the local Gaelic Football Club, were very supportive during those formative years by promoting the Galahs, lending us players and generally being good blokes, in a friendly club relationship that continues on to this day.
By the second year, the club could stand on its own in terms of numbers and the first official games began to take place. It took a while for the Galahs to find their wings, but since then they have won three Austrian Championships in a row.

2020 was difficult for many sports leagues, especially niche international sports, but the Galahs made it through with help from their rivals the Styrian DownUnder Dogs, and many new members looking to get outdoors, stay fit and socialise through the pandemic. The Galahs running group got many players through the winter, and the Marmalads band began to jam. The Galahs narrowly beat Graz in the final match of the year.

2021 saw the Austrian Cup include Budapest Bats AFC and to be also referred to as the Duna Cup, as well as turning the 3 yearly matches between Vienna and Graz into 3 tournament-rounds between the 3 teams, as well as friendly exhibition matches with Munich, Prague and Poland. The Galahs won the Austrian Cup against Graz.

2022 and the club is running smoothly. 3 Austrian/Duna Cup tournaments, one hosted by each team. Galahs represented in 2 Polish tournaments and 2 friendly matches against Prague. Weekend training camps, mountain hikes and weekly dinners. The beginnings of the Galahs Women's Team. The Galahs won the Austrian Cup against Graz for the third year in a row.

2023 marked the beginning of the Empire Cup, a newly formed league to include teams from Prague, Budapest, Graz and Vienna.
Hosting the first round was a special honour for our club! Our women's team started strong into their first full season with matches alongside the Empire Cup as well as games in Munich and at the Nysa Cup.
More social events this year such as hiking trips, quiz nights and parties.
Splendid end of the season with a win for our men in the Empire Cup after 4 rounds! We are glad to have had another seamless transition to indoor winter training and great attendance for this off-season skill and fitness development!

2024 saw the Empire Cup expand to include Nysa, Poland. This is also included their women's side, providing a new tough opponent for the Galahs women's team. The Galahs played strongly throughout the year, making it to the grand final but losing a tough battle to Prague in the extreme summer heat. The year also included several friendly matches, including an Anzac tournament where the German and Israel national teams were hosted in Vienna. Our partner Schnauzer & Beagle hosted the first team brew day to create the Galah's own beer: The Galahger (available on tap at Schnauzer & Beagle). As always there were also plenty of social events, including Pub quizzes, summer raves, toga parties and footy grand final viewings.

2025 is another year full of potential, so become a member and experience what it means to be a Galah.
